The City of Santa Fe is updating its Land Development Code (LDC), also known as Chapter 14, in the City's Code of Ordinances. They have hired a Denver consulting firm, Clarion, to assist with the code updates.
The Land Development Code governs land use in Santa Fe. This key document defines parameters for zoning and density, establishes processes for granting exceptions/variances to land use designations and zoning, outlines the historic districts, and sets design standards for historic preservation.
The LDC update has the potential to greatly impact how Santa Fe looks and feels in the future. The Old Santa Fe Association will provide input to the city and to the consultant to ensure that historic preservation concerns are recognized, respected and addressed.
Supporters of historic preservation are encouraged to fill out an initial survey as the update processes enters Phase 1, where the consulting group will do "code hygiene." Phase 1 will remove contradictions in the code and streamline some processes already in place. Updates to the code are necessary as Santa Fe grows, but it could also present a risk to some protections unless citizens are engaged and aware of the processes and changes.
The next meeting, a description of Phases and adding your email for notifications is on the city’s LDC update website.
