Our Lady of Light Church &
Historic Foundation
in Lamy, New Mexico

Our Lady of Light Church (Nuestra Señora
de la Luz) in Lamy was built between 1926
and 1929 after a rash of fires and floods
destroyed a 19th-century church in the same
location. Lamy was a thriving community at
the time, still a railroad hub and the home
of the Fred Harvey hotel, El Ortiz. But in
the next two decades, rail travel declined
and the population of the town shrank. The
destruction of El Ortiz in the 1940s added
to the town’s decreasing commerce. In
1994, the church was deconsecrated by the
Archdiocese of Santa Fe.

Our Lady of Light (OLOL) Historic Foundation
was founded in 1997. Restoration
of the building is on-going.
