In November 2022, the Old Santa Fe Association adopted Steam Locomotive 5030 that has been located at Salvador Perez Park since 1959. In a public bell-ringing ceremony, the train's safety bell, formerly used to alert nearby people and animals of the train, was rung.

Locomotive No. 5030 is one of Santa Fe's historic landmarks. Because its condition had deteriorated over time and was in need of restoration, community advocate Rick Martinez reached out to the Old Santa Fe Association for help. With community assistance, the train was repaired and painted, the surrounding grounds were cleaned up, and new fencing was installed.
 
Many thanks go to Xtreme Painting, a local business that volunteered to coat the locomotive with a black rust-resistant finish, and to the City of Santa Fe that provided around $1,200 for the project.
 
The locomotive is a reminder of our past. It is a magnificent piece of machinery that is representative of transportation. Built for the AT&SF by Baldwin in 1944, the locomotive was designed to haul heavy freight at speeds up to 70 mph and was later used to transport troops during the final years of WWII. Only 25 of these steam engines were made, with only four remaining.
 
Community efforts preserved this impressive piece of history for all to enjoy.
